Corona-Amnestie? – mit DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli

4. Nov 20228 Kommentare

Also mein Modell ist ja Kopf, Herz, Bauch.

Milena Preradovic: Also Angst macht dumm.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Angst macht dumm, unreflektierte Emotionen machen immer dumm.

DDr.

Also Angst, Hass usw.. Vieles passiert einfach.

DDr.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Ja.

Also jemanden ist schuldig gesprochen. So einfach ist es nicht. Also, zuerst muss einmal aufgearbeitet werden: Wie waren denn die Dinge? Wie sind sie gelaufen? Was ist passiert?

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: War schon auch dabei. Okay, gut. Und jetzt is halt. Also was kriegen wir alles hin, was kriegen wir alles gebacken?

Milena Preradovic: Vorher in Salzburg übrigens und davor in Berlin also.

DDr.

Milena Preradovic: Ein kleiner Scherz.

DDr. Ja, will.

DDr.

Interview with DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli (english)

Milena Preradovic: For two and a half years, we have been experiencing a social disaster. Whether in Germany or Austria, society is deeply divided and people are hostile to each other. Those in power are not much help, even denying the obvious, like Chancellor Scholz, and further fueling the mood. Divide and rule, a dangerous game. Meanwhile, fears and aggression have replaced joie de vivre and tolerant coexistence. Outrage is the new debate, morality the new argument. As a psychiatrist, my guest has experienced this development firsthand and commented on it. He says, “We are slipping further and further into a narcissistic outrage society.” That’s certainly not good for us. Can we get out of it? And what do our gut feelings have to do with it? We’ll talk about that now in point Preradovic. Hello, Dr. Raphael Bonelli.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Hello. Good day.

Milena Preradovic: Let me introduce you briefly: You are a neuroscientist and university lecturer at Sigmund Freud Private University Vienna as well as a psychiatrist and systemic psychotherapist in private practice, also author of scientific publications in the border area between neurology and psychiatry. As director of the Interdisciplinary and Interreligious Institute Resources in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy RPP in Vienna since 2007, you have brought psychiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists into a scientific dialogue with philosophers, theologians and religious scholars. And you have also critically followed the corona crisis with your institute’s Youtube channel, which has more than 230,000 subscribers, and shed light on its consequences for people’s psyches. You are also the author of several books. Your new one is called Gut Feelings, How They Arise, What They Tell Us, How We Use Them. And in it, they also shed light on two topics that we are all very familiar with by now-fears and aggression. They write, “Especially among young people, such anxiety disorders are becoming increasingly common. Since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, fear communication in the media, and mandated lockdowns, depression and anxiety disorders have increased by 25%.” How do these anxiety disorders manifest?

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Well, in principle, anxiety is one of these basal emotions. So this book is all about emotions and how I deal with them. And fear says no out loud, while lust says yes out loud. So there are yes feelings and no feelings, so to speak. That’s how I divide it up. And both feelings, that is, both groups of feelings, are peculiar in that they, that they are just before reasonable, so to speak. So they need the control of reason and that because feelings have the tendency to exaggerate. Both the feelings of pleasure and the feelings of fear. Feelings of fear are feelings that represent danger so vividly, so to speak. That means that the danger is so exaggerated that the patient then – I’m a psychiatrist, I normally deal with patients – that the patient then goes excessively into security and that he then develops too much security, in the direction of obsessive-compulsive disorder and in the direction of too much, barricading oneself in and withdrawing and somehow not having any, no longer having any perspective on life because of all the security. My perception in society is now, if I now transfer my personal expertise, that is, my expertise for the individual, to society, that we have slid from the pleasure society, that is, the sixty-eight, I live from Live your urges, everything that makes pleasure, that the you from the pleasure society in frantic steps within a few years into an anxiety society, into an aversive society, where we now only think about what could be dangerous, what must I avoid? Climate, Corona, inflation, hatred on the net, all kinds of things, but everywhere it’s about avoiding something and actually, we psychiatrists know, life is lost in the process.

Milena Preradovic: So I stop living and of course I ask myself, if this affects so many young people, what are the consequences for the future, also for the future of a society?

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Yes, first of all, as a psychiatrist I start with the person. The more a person is restricted by his fears, the narrower life becomes and the more he fixates on danger, like the mouse in front of the snake. The mouse in front of the snake, that is, in the picture, in the figurative sense, freezes and looks only at the snake, instead of actually looking the other way and living life. It is the same with anxiety patients. The more anxiety patients slip into this anxiety theme, the less they can live. And for society, that means that young people feel less and less of this love of life, but more and more of this, this, this no future or this last generation, this the world is ending and and everything is so terrible. And why live at all? Or why have children at all? Logically, all this is very typical of people who only stare at the danger instead of recognizing the opportunities that are opened up by the crisis.

Milena Preradovic: And how do you get people out of it?

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Well, the big problem socially is that not everyone comes to me.

Milena Preradovic: But maybe one or the other can learn from them.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Well, eh, but the people who come to me, with them, i.e. with the anxiety patients, I try to make sure that we first switch on the head, as with every other emotion. So my model is head, heart, stomach. That means I have a gut feeling. This can be either fearful or pleasurable, but in this case it is fearful and I have to check whether it is reasonable. I have patients who have a spider phobia. Fear of spiders, but it’s still, but they are so afraid of spiders that they are also afraid of spider photos. And they don’t dare to touch a spider photo. So, that means the therapy is to turn on your head once and ask Is it reasonable not to touch this spider photo? Can the spider photo do anything to you? And if we develop in this way, then the patient develops more freedom. It’s the same with fear of heights, for example, isn’t it? The only way to regain life is to confront the alleged danger. By going out into the world again. The classic example, which we psychiatrists know to the nth degree, is the duty, the compulsion to wash.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: The compulsive washing even before Korona was characterized by the fact that people were extremely afraid of some pathogens, viruses, bacteria, fungi, whatever. They were then constantly walking around with a disinfectant, sometimes also with a mouth-nose protection, so FFP2 mask I actually never had. That would be a step up. Everywhere they have disinfected, have attacked the doors only with the elbow, because they were afraid everywhere to infect. We know that, that has then become socially endemic or pandemic. This way of thinking, But these people, I had to bring back to reality that the world is full of viruses and that a virus does not kill us immediately. And that is unless we just have a major immune deficiency or we haven’t trained it, overweight, etc. So that means putting the danger in proportion to what I lose, because of course I’m always safer if I stay within my four walls, but I just can’t live either. That is the principle. And you can get psychiatric patients out very well. Getting society out is a bit more difficult.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, and especially when the fear is triggered further and further. We can see that. This is Corona, climate, war. There are always new fears being triggered and the old ones too, so with Corona, of course, they keep trying. Let’s see how it will be this fall. But if this is triggered by politics, by the media, how big is the chance to get out of it?

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: I don’t know the situation in Germany very well, but with Corona I would say that in the general population a certain immunity has set in, an intellectual immunity. Of course, there are still some pharma-geared fear preachers who like to paint the danger or the monster on the wall, but hardly anyone listens to them anymore. So serenity is on the rise. As a psychiatrist, I am pleased that this collective obsessive-compulsive neurosis that we have experienced for two years is really falling away from many people. What I also observe is that many people say that I was actually always against it. So a lot of people say that they were always against it. I always have to smile, because not many people were actually against it, but it doesn’t matter, maybe in my head it does. I’m glad, but at least in Austria I notice a change in the mood and worldwide I would definitely see it the same way. Germany, I think, is really a special case. But there, too, I think there are many more sensible voices that, so to speak, put the, real threat in relation to what you can lose.

Milena Preradovic: Fear is also useful for those in power, because those who are afraid or very afraid are more inclined to obey. Is fear in this society or in this system in which we live also a kind of weapon that is used specifically?

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Well, we are talking about, I would like to expand this a bit, not only fear, but also, if I may refer to the book. I can be manipulated by all my emotions if I don’t reflect them. Both fear and hatred, for example, don’t. Or also greed. So if we take greed, that is, if you promise somebody, you’ll get a lot of return or a lot of profit in a very short time, then they can have very, very much from a person, because he is just greedy. I have very many, some patients who have fallen for a trickster and who have lost a lot of money and I have analyzed all of them and in summary I can say, all of them were manipulated where they were too greedy. One specific example was, can you lend me €20,000? Next week you’ll get 30,000 back. Instead of saying with your head that can’t be, he can’t do that, it doesn’t pay off for him at all. That is not reasonable. Is greed so strong that you say, “Wow, I have to win the 30,000 now. This is my chance and that’s why I give him 20,000, and of course he was over the moon.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: He is just as easily manipulated in the area of hate. If one, hate and fear is by the way very closely linked, so purely from the form, from the psycho biology. But not this shitstorm to say, we are outraged now about a specific person. The shitstorm is pure emotion, very few arguments are used, and in the end, in the middle of the shitstorm, no one knows any more what exactly he has done wrong. But we are all against it in any case, and no one is allowed to argue with him. That is so typical. But fear still works best, because fear becomes existential, i.e. greed. There I have halt am more of something, but the fear, there you can grab someone by the life. That’s why almost everyone prefers totalitarian regimes. This fear manipulation. Because to say you will go to jail, you will be punished, you will be ostracized or punished even more dangerously, or even more dangerously endangered. That does so much to people that they can’t get into that intellectual level at all. They can no longer get away from the gut into thinking.

Milena Preradovic: So fear makes you stupid.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Fear makes you stupid, unreflective emotions always make you stupid. Greed also makes you stupid and hate also makes you stupid. But fear also makes you stupid. Exactly. Fear makes you stupid, but the special thing about fear is that when you have your back to the wall with fear, it’s very easy to tip over into aggression. That’s what we saw at Corona. That the people who were particularly afraid then had very few inhibitions to treat the so-called culprits aggressively. And that, if you look at that in history, you see that very often. That the fear, people become very particularly aggressive and exclude, discriminate and also treat people really badly, minorities mostly just. Those who are blamed. That’s classic, but that’s, that’s in our gut feelings. That’s why my recipe is that if you have gut feelings, you learn to perceive gut feelings. So I’m in fear now, you have to feel that. Many people didn’t even feel how much they were in fear. So I’m in the fear. Second Once, it’s reasonable, and third, it’s consistent with my values. Is it in line with my values to treat another person, even if they don’t agree with me, like that? Is it in line with my values at all? And then to act first? So don’t act from your gut, but first interpose your head and heart. That is my solution to the issue we are facing.

Milena Preradovic: You also wrote something about values in the book and you say, you write: “Our materialistic society has made it a desirable goal to earn money for money’s sake. This has to do with a social thinning of values.” What values are you referring to that are no longer so present?

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: We have moved away from the classical philosophy with the cardinal virtues, prudence, justice, bravery, moderation. That’s kind of, that’s totally twisted. Many values are completely new. For example, this language, these many language values. There are more and more rules about what you can say and what you can’t say. That you have to say how you have to behave, what you are allowed to buy where, where you are not allowed to buy. So somehow everything has become much tighter, although just what is traditionally decent or what is proper. That’s totally frowned upon, you’re not allowed to say or think that at all anymore, everything has to be completely different. So the values have shifted a lot, but they have shifted towards a superficiality. To a, so that has no, the cardinal virtues were developed by Aristotle and Plato. That has a very long school of thought behind it, while just these new values to say, one may not say such and such words to someone with a certain skin color, but one must now necessarily say other words and everywhere one must add a binary i and all sorts of things not. That has comparatively no substance to what we actually, where we come from, intellectually.

Milena Preradovic: Is it perhaps also due to this lack of values that many people turn to other things as a substitute religion? At Corona it also seemed to me that for many people it is a matter of faith, still is or was, and that you can’t reach these people with arguments at all.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Corona was definitely a subjective self-exaltation for many people, because they could feel like good people again. So it was very cleverly presented and portrayed that if you behave this way and that way, you can be a good person, you are morally superior to the others. I call that in this book I describe it exactly, call that moral narcissism. That is, the narcissist is one who idealizes himself and who makes the others bad. In other words, self-aggrandizement and devaluation of others. The devaluation of the other and the moral narcissism, in my opinion, consists precisely in the fact that I morally elevate myself. I am the better person, I am good. What I do is the right thing and what you do is so wrong that even a dialogue with you would be wrong. That is, you are not even capable of satisfaction. You’re not even allowed to be on a talk show, you have to be canceled, so to speak, you have to be ignored, you have to be boycotted, you can’t have a bank account anymore. You’re basically not allowed to live in our society anymore because who you are is so inferior and I’m so superior that that’s not allowed to be. That’s moral narcissism. And the way I described it, I think you can see unclearly and easily that that’s what happened to us.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, but that was also so fueled, also by politics, also by the media. This good and evil, this morality as a new argument, as new facts, that continues to be pretended, as if this is now about climate. There is no discussion or there must be none. There must not be any discussion on this subject, so whoever starts to look at the Russian position in this war is already a heretic or a Nazi, or who knows what? This is a very difficult direction. I mean, if you think this through to the end socially, then we will soon be back to witch burnings?

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Well, I would say that tolerance has really taken a wild step backwards. You’re right about that one. If we now address this Russia issue, then one must, then actually de-escalating is already almost a sin, a modern sin, so to speak. I tried to de-escalate mainly in the Corona period and it was amazing how many people came to me aggressively because they can’t hear this word. So de-escalate is already too much communication with the other person. And exactly the same pattern we have now, that you are not allowed to listen to the Russian position at all. You are not allowed to present it or think about it. But listening to it or perceiving it does not mean that I believe it to be true, but only that I listen to it, because I can only find a solution. So I have this with the couple therapy, I can only find a solution if I do not take sides between man and woman, but if I listen to man, listen to woman and then try to bring the two together. But if I say, man, you’re a pig, you’re always wrong and your arguments don’t interest me, because woman is always right, or vice versa, then logically I won’t get anywhere, because then one of the two will always block. That’s why the classic position of mediator is so important between Ukraine and Russia. I am really shocked to see how especially the German peace movement has completely lost its innocence by demonizing exactly what we now urgently need. What we definitely do not need is a third world war.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, we certainly don’t need that. But as a psychiatrist, how do you explain this belligerence? It’s very big in Germany again, and in other countries as well. But I see it in Germany as well, also as I said with the peace movement, with the Greens, who still said in the election campaign, just don’t deliver weapons to war zones and demand exactly that. How do you explain this, this lustful, this lustful glorification of war and this wanting to go further and further ahead?

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: You know, me. I am a philanthropic psychiatrist and human being. And I always try to be very benevolent with people. But I can’t say it other than we’re just too stupid. So I think we’re too stupid. And at the very forefront in this, in this lack of intelligence, I think, at the moment are the German politicians, the ones who are doing such agitation. Why are the, I mean, they’re all not particularly qualified, it has to be said, when you compare them to their. So with the history of German politicians over the last 50 years, then I would say Wow, there’s been a decent drop in class. But. But what I think particularly triggers them is this are the gut feelings. These are people who act very much from their gut. And I’ll repeat that again In a gut feeling, we’re always manipulable. In reality, these are people who are not suffering, they are being manipulated themselves. They are manipulated, from my point of view, by the desire to be a good person and that they are only a good person if they are just for the war. Obviously, the warring parties have succeeded in doing that. But when you see how some Ukrainian politicians intervene in German thinking by speaking out, which is then also really taken up by mediocre German politicians, then you can see a little bit where this is going. So there is a strong longing or a need to appear as a good person and to make strong statements. That’s what I see in politics at the moment, and that’s why I think it’s happened to German politicians. I don’t think they have full control over themselves and their thinking. There is not much thinking, I think, that is more gut feelings than anything else and relatively little reflection. Because I think we have already learned in school, in elementary school, that with war-mongering you will end up in the third world war at some point. That’s why you have to actively deny or erase that this is actually the logical consequence.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, but you talk about gut feeling, about not reflecting. So now just from so-called educated and intellectual people came in the Coroner time or even now in the war time actually often the most nasty and even just accusations? Maybe I would have thought that they are more capable of reflecting.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: I mean, what is really intelligent and educated now, that is of course, you can think about it a lot now. But of course it was clear in the Corona time that if you go with the flow, that you can make a lot of profit, especially with people whose spine is not very pronounced. They just think about okay, how do I set my sail now so that I get as much wind in it as possible? I would rather say that the intelligent ones, or let’s call them the smart ones, or the clever ones, have made a lot of profit. Yes, on the one hand financially, we all know that, but also media attention-wise, in that they have set sentences in such a way that they have gotten as much attention as possible. But I wouldn’t call that intelligence. Perhaps social intelligence in the sense that many politicians, and especially many journalists, have very quickly realized what I’m allowed to say and what I’m not allowed to say. And they have adapted to that. I think we Austrians and they Germans are particularly strong when it comes to adapting. Does that have anything to do with our history?

Milena Preradovic: Maybe you could call it cleverness. But how is it that there is a group after all? How can you explain it psychiatrically, that there is a group that doesn’t participate, that accepts a lot in order not to participate?

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Well, thank God we are a pluralistic society and people have very different positions on different issues for different reasons. That has always been the case. Let’s take the topic of vaccination. There is a community of homeopaths, for example, who see that vaccination is very negative anyway. They were already in a defensive position about these words, and then there were others who took a closer look at studies. I would say that this is a very inhomogeneous group of people who, for the most diverse reasons, have come to the conclusion that where society is going, that it is not necessarily sensible there. But what they all have in common is that they didn’t trust their first gut instinct to it, but they reflected a lot. Why? Because just, as you said, swimming against the tide caused a lot of difficulties. So the more difficult a course I take, the more I have to think about, is it even right? So swimming against the current, I think about it three times. I think less about going with the flow, because the media tell me that I’m right anyway, and the politicians say this, and the so-called experts say that. I don’t have to think much, I don’t have to inform myself much. So I see a big information, a big information difference between those who swim against the current and those who swim with the current.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: I would say that already overall. So but what strikes me as a psychiatrist is that it is becoming more and more clear what is in the media, namely what we have to think. Especially people from the former GDR and from the former Eastern Bloc have a very strong immune system. The first of my patients who said that reminds me of the old days was a very prominent singer from Bulgaria or Romania. She told me, I tell you what, this reminds me of the worst times of Romania and Romania was really bad and I thought, she is exaggerating a lot. And then she carried it out and we always stayed in contact. The was there at the very beginning and she says You know, the rules that nobody understands, nobody knows what is forbidden, what is allowed. The rules are constantly changing. You don’t dare to do anything anymore. That’s exactly how it was in Romania. And that’s what many people tell me who have already lived in such totalitarian regimes. This is a group that of course had the immune system, they had so much experience, it wasn’t about vaccination or Ukraine or anything else, it was about the way the media and the state communicate with us. I would say that is maybe the biggest group and for me the most impressive.

Milena Preradovic: But if the state and the media communicate with us in this way, as has already happened in other totalitarian states, then it is not just stupidity or just gut feeling. To me it sounds like a certain intent, because the same rules, the same propaganda mechanisms are being applied.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Well, certainly there is someone, there are certainly people who are planning. But I don’t think that they are, first of all, the masses, who are primarily guided by gut feeling. So fear, hate, etc.. All this has a lot to do with gut feeling. There I only need to trigger gut feeling. That’s all I need for that. Nothing is needed there, no thinking. On the level of politicians, I think they overestimate the ability of politicians to plan. I think that these people also tend to swim in the soup. But of course there are string pullers somewhere and people who think a bit more. But a lot of things happen, too, I would say. Many things just happen. That the pharmaceutical industry wants to make money, so look, I’m a doctor, so that doesn’t surprise me. So we doctors all know the pharma-speak, that is to lift a drug to the skies. There are virtually no side effects. Everybody should take that. So we know that from so many pharmaceutical representatives who always talk like that. We just call it pharma-speak. And when a doctor repeats that, we call the pharma whore, I say it along as an excuse, so that’s what it’s called. We call these doctors, who repeat this, they are mostly financially supported by the pharmaceutical industry, we call them pharmaceutical whores, so we recognize these speakers.

Milena Preradovic: But then there seems to be a lot of pharma whores, if you look how the doctors also behaved in this time.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Well, you must not forget that the vast majority of prominent doctors have or had very close ties to the pharmaceutical industry. So that’s a fact. So that’s, that’s not a conspiracy theory, that’s a fact, that if one comes up, if one is habilitated, it also happens to me, then the representatives are immediately at the door and that’s not indecent, you just have to understand it. The interesting thing is that the politicians have not understood that an expert has a conflict of interest, that you have to ask him beforehand who actually pays them? Before you give your expertise now. That never happened.

Milena Preradovic: No, it didn’t even happen that someone with a different opinion was even invited to these expert councils. That didn’t happen either, which is normally a very strange development. I have something new, so I have to bring together capacities from all directions. Because basically, solutions can only be found through discourse, or if everyone is allowed to participate.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: But now back to this gut feeling. I just want to say that there are different reasons. The gut feeling of greed, is with many experts of course the motive for, let’s say giving asymmetric opinions. That is so long no problem in the medical circle, as long as that evenly a product advertisement happens only within medical profession. That is also forbidden to carry a product advertisement for a pharmaceutical material before laymen, but actually there only medical profession may purely. The fact that this is suddenly being played out by the media in this way has, I believe, completely overwhelmed society, and it all has to be worked through first. But it only shows me one thing: we are simply too stupid, or we have learned too little to reflect our gut feelings through our head. Belly, heart and head. So with this solution we get out of the number again, because we have to think about it now. We can now reflect on how terrible it all was. But I think it would be even more important to say how do we get out? We can get out of it by noticing our gut feeling, but then doing something with this perception, namely reflection and then making a decision that I don’t necessarily act according to my fear, but act sensibly.

Milena Preradovic: But how does a person who has never done much reflecting learn to reflect on his own? I know a lot of people who assume that their opinion is the right one, that their view of the world is the only one and the only true one. In other words, these are people who, in my opinion, never reflect on themselves. How do they learn that? They often don’t even know what it is, do they?

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Well, of course, you are now logically talking about the social and the political. For me, that is only a marginal aspect. In the center is for me,

Milena Preradovic: No, that is reflecting, generally questioning oneself.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: That’s exactly what I understood. But many people start thinking in crisis. What makes psychotherapy so effective is the formulation of feelings. That one formulates the feelings and then thinks about it, can there be truth or not. Not this question that the therapist then often asks. This question is extremely healing, because then you formulate everything that is in you. And if you then say okay, but if they, for example, the principle of safe is safe, that sounds so good and we have also heard that frequently in the last three years, but that is the total killer in reality. Because safe is safe is just, I’m going to stay home. A piano could fall on my head or a roof tile, or anything could happen, a terrorist or whatever. The climate or a volcanic eruption. All right, never mind then. So there can be so many dangers coming at me, but I’m preventing life. This proportionality, I can only get that with my head. I can’t do it with my stomach, and that’s why this joint reflection is so important, and it’s especially helpful when two people have different points of view.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Classically, the point of view of a married couple between husband and wife. Then you can try, okay, you see it as two different directions, than let’s try to bring it together. That’s why the intolerance is so bad because you don’t say okay, what’s the true thing about the other position? But rather the postulate is yes, nobody is allowed to even think with that about the other postulate. That’s what makes me so unhappy about these exponentiations, the exponentiations like, for example, conspiracy theorists. That is a potentiation that actually has only one psychological effect: “I don’t need to think about your position any more, that is, there is someone in front of me who possibly has intelligent arguments, but he doesn’t even get that far. Then someone else comes along and says, “Watch out, that’s a conspiracy theorist. That means you don’t talk to him, you don’t even have to deal with what he says. That means I stay inside with my gut feeling. I reject him with my gut feeling. I need. I don’t get to the cerebrum. And that’s the dilemma if people understand that, if they can get back into the conversation, then we’ll work through that. I do believe that we are coming back to an age of reason, but that is still a long way off.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, that could be because of our age, or maybe we don’t experience it anymore. But you talk about coming to terms. But now there are calls for a Corona amnesty. So to speak, everyone: We have nothing, we didn’t know. In other words, all those who have defamed and marginalized, who have basically violated everything that makes up human coexistence. Now they want to make a clean sweep of it and argue that this is the only way to restore social cohesion as a whole. Do you think that can work?

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Yes. Well, so, that’s natural. Um. So, I haven’t heard it like that.

Milena Preradovic: It’s a discussion in America that is now also being discussed in Germany.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Uh, okay. Yes, of course it’s obvious with the people who have enriched themselves there. So to establish a fair, a justice, will certainly be a very difficult thing. And I don’t think that’s the job of the psychiatrist, but actually more of a judge. But from a purely social point of view, I think I would say it doesn’t matter anyway. That’s too little. I think first of all it has to be worked through, how were things really? Because there were people.

Milena Preradovic: They don’t want that and that’s why amnesty should be granted.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Well, yes, but the amnesty. But the amnesty is. Even an amnesty still clearly establishes who is the guilty party. An amnesty means yes, the guilt is now suspended. But the guilt exists. So someone is found guilty. It is not that simple. So, first of all, things have to be worked through: What were things like? How did they go? What happened? And here we are again with a gut feeling. Everything that gut feelings have done in the course of history had to be worked through with reason, with the head, so that it wouldn’t happen again. And there we have entered a new stage, namely a global hysteria, so to speak. And that’s why it’s extremely helpful for us to work it through, so that then, how we then, whether they are then punished or not, is, I think, a, that’s then a very difficult question. I think after the after the Second World War, thank God we worked it up properly. I don’t know exactly after the end of the GDR how that was worked through or not. I hear different voices there. I can’t judge that either.

Milena Preradovic: But there was certainly a bit of a winner’s mentality.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: It was there, too. Okay, good. And now it’s just. So whenever an epoch comes to an end. I don’t see an epoch coming to an end yet, but I think it’s important to clarify things so that we know what we humans are capable of. So what can we manage, what can we get done? I was particularly impressed by this hatred. That people are afraid of the disease. That’s not impressive. What is impressive is the hatred that arises for those who think differently. We urgently need to address this. So there is a need to talk about it, and we definitely have to look at whether everyone is judged or not. Yes, that is now, that is another question, but I think it must be put in perspective that they were not all cranks, but rather prophets. In the hysterical times that we have already experienced in Germany and Austria, the prophets were always stamped as the stupid ones or as the or actually not only in the German-speaking countries, but in general. Prophets are unpleasant and don’t like to be heard. And that’s why I think it helps to make it clear that okay, they were right. I think that helps a lot. And that is not part of the amnesty, that you first say who was right and who was wrong? I think that does a lot of good in retrospect. So what you see the witches are not to blame for the plague. It’s good to say that.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, so far I have heard little in this from this direction. So now not the witches, but now as far as the current one with Corona. But in her book, which I read with very great interest and also learned a lot, there it’s about educating these gut feelings, and with head and heart. We’ve already talked a bit about the head, but I think I gathered from your book that the heart is actually still the decisive factor. Can you explain that briefly?

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: The heart is decisive. The heart is decisive because the heart shapes the directions in which man develops. And man can shape himself by deciding for the true, the good and the beautiful. And if he goes in this direction, and if he does not always look at the ugly, but just at the true, good and beautiful. When he thinks about, What kind of person do I want to be, then he sort of gets, then he promotes the right gut feelings that go in the right direction, and pushes the gut feelings aside a little bit. Or don’t let them overflow into actions that prevent you from doing that. Example not so gut feelings tend to make you lie at some point because lying is easy. Gut feelings are short term, after all, which means that if I lie, I’m afraid of the punishment. And if I lie, then I won’t be punished. That’s short-term thinking, quite typical, isn’t it? And if I learn to tell the truth, then I may have it worse in the short term, but in the long term, I’m a truthful person who can be relied on and who people respect. And in that respect, this long-term learning, that’s a matter of the heart. The belly is not capable of the long term, the belly is short term and the belly actually thinks only until, not even until tomorrow, but only in the here and now.

Milena Preradovic: Well, before I read your book, I had a completely different view of my gut feeling and was actually quite proud. I used to be more of a head person and at some point I also allowed my gut to feel more. Maybe I’m expressing this a bit incorrectly, but I did make decisions based on my gut, not without thinking, but based on my gut. My gut told me that this was the right decision. For example, the decision to move to Carinthia made relatively little sense in my head. But my gut told me that was a good decision and it was possibly the best decision I ever made. So the, the gut can’t be all bad after all. Or is that a different gut I’m talking about?

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: If you have read the belly book, then you will already admit that I do not write that, that the belly is always bad, but the belly is excellent. It does its job. But the belly counts on us to think about it. The stomach is an early alarm system. It is highly sensitive, it senses things that we would not think about. But it senses them unilaterally. And that’s why I always have to interpret them correctly. So whether I live in Carinthia or in Berlin. In principle, it’s not a question of values, but you can live there and there. And if you feel more comfortable in Carinthia than in Berlin, then I can understand that as an Austrian.

Milena Preradovic: Before that in Salzburg, by the way, and before that in Berlin.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Well, before that we didn’t care much about them, but in Berlin we did.

Milena Preradovic: A little joke.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: It doesn’t matter where you are, so there are very many things that don’t matter from the reason and from the heart. And then it’s good if you go by the head, if you go by the gut. That’s even excellent, because the belly perceives a lot of things that I don’t perceive. But sometimes the gut is just irrational, like being afraid of a spider that’s in a photograph. That’s an irrational fear and many fears are irrational and many lusts are also irrational. You know, so, the desire for sexual gratification here and now immediately is often very irrational and doesn’t correspond to our values, even if we have it. And then you can say no thanks, that works, that works. So I can make of myself a person, so to speak, that I want to be, So I’m not, So my gut feelings are not my destiny, I’m not my gut feelings, I have gut feelings. So I can still take a stand. I can say. Yes, want. I want it vanilla. Eat it, right? No, I don’t. I don’t want to eat vanilla ice cream, even though I feel like it.

Milena Preradovic: But does the belly get better with age as it gains more experience?

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Yes, yes, yes. The abdomen gets better when we, when we have trained it. But the abdomen doesn’t get better if we haven’t trained it. And these trained belly feelings, Aristotle calls them the virtues. The virtues are nothing other than the lightness in the tone of the good. Because I have chosen the good and have done the good until the gut has become accustomed to it. That’s when I like to do the good and do it with pleasure. For example, telling the truth, that works then. That works.

Milena Preradovic: Now you said in a video that Amazon is giving you problems with your book.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: So the book has been out for three weeks now, it was number 13, on Amazon in the best selling books and still you can’t order it through Prime. Not until today, for three weeks, When the publisher writes there why that is so, you write: “Yes, that’s just the way it is, it will change”. So it’s completely crazy.

Milena Preradovic: Do you have any idea? Is it just because it’s not now a, so it’s a good book, but it has yes, I would say it doesn’t concern now or it’s not many narratives, so political narratives completely off the hook.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: No, because exactly, because the political narratives are rather stupid and and so. So that goes rather deeper, this book, I don’t know. I can only say, it reminds me of the struggle on YouTube, they just block something and you can’t do anything about it. So I have no idea how Amazon. I don’t. You know, you can’t even get to people, you’re left with an email or some automated other, whatever. So that’s spooky, anyway. So I realize, I think you have to. We have to be careful that such giant companies don’t rule our time inhumanly. Because if we had a lot of booksellers, they would simply sell the book. If people want that, they would sell it, but Amazon doesn’t say, I’m not selling this one book or not so much. I kind of boycott that. You can buy it already, but.

Milena Preradovic: You can buy it. But it will. I looked it up earlier, it says that it will be delivered between the 24th of November and the 29th of December, which is unusual.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: But in Austria you have to pay 10 €, on top of that. So it’s in Germany, I don’t know, so probably not. So that’s kind of bizarre, because anyway, I can’t explain it, but it’s very strange. But it’s just like YouTube and probably Apple works the same way, but I haven’t had any trouble there.

Milena Preradovic: Yeah, no, it’s crazy, but we have so under this video we have then also linked your page where you can also purchase this book.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Ah, that’s very nice.

Milena Preradovic: You don’t have to.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Thank you.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, Dr. Bonelli, thank you very much. I have been able to gain interesting insights from your book for my life as well. Thank you very much also for that And thank you for being there.

DDr. Raphael M. Bonelli: Yes. Thank you very much. Goodbye. Ciao.

Milena Preradovic: Well, guys, actually the book helps to understand us better and maybe to understand the others better. And that’s probably one of the core challenges of this time. Basically, we all belong to the human family and we should treat each other with tolerance, with respect. And yes, we all have to take a look at our own noses from time to time and not just point the finger at others. I wish you a good time. See you soon.
