Kranke Seele – kranker Körper – mit Dr. med. Sabine Helmbold und Corinna Busch

Milena Preradovic: Das Schlagwort seit zwei Jahren “Gesundheit”. Fatal. Wir halten dagegen. Jetzt im Punkt Preradovic. Hallo, Dr. Sabine Helmbold und Corinna Busch.

Dr. Sabine Helmbold: Hallo.

Corinna Busch: Hallo, Frau Preradovic.

Könnten Sie kurz da was zu sagen?

Was darf ich erkennen?

Was erwartet mich dort?

Also diese zwei Ansatzpunkte.

Das, was man dadurch gewinnt.

Alles Gute. Danke für das Gespräch.

Dr. Sabine Helmbold: Wir danken.

Corinna Busch: Vielen Dank. Danke.

Interview with Dr. Sabine Helmbold, Corinna Busch (english)

Milena Preradovic: The buzzword for two years “health”. “We have to limit ourselves for health”. “We must isolate the elderly, for health. We must avoid contacts”. And so on. But is health really only the fight against a respiratory virus? What about mental and spiritual health? After all, we need these quite urgently for a good life. What good is it to be spared from Corona, only to sink into depression and suicidal thoughts? Politicians and virologists are not interested in this health at all. They spread fear for health. Fatal. We hold against it. Now in the point Preradovic. Hello, Dr. Sabine Helmbold and Corinna Busch.

Dr. Sabine Helmbold: Hello.

Corinna Busch: Hello, Ms. Preradovic.

Milena Preradovic: Let me introduce you briefly. Dr. Helmbold, you are a human physician and a journalist. You studied at the University of Erlangen Nuremberg, where you also received your doctorate. You also have training in traditional Chinese medicine and had a practice for TCM and energetic treatments for ten years. As a journalist you have worked for ZDF, among others, editorially and in front of the camera. In the last two years, you have produced numerous videos for “Doctors for Enlightenment” and advised people who needed support in life crises. Ms. Corinna Busch, you are a PR professional, journalist and author, and also have training in systematic coaching and hypnosystemic interviewing. When it comes to PR, you have represented celebrities from Hollywood and Europe, as well as business enterprises and clinics. And you have been psychologically advising executives for eight years. Now you have founded the “Academy for Mental Health and Life Design”, where people with mental stress are accompanied, also and especially by Dr. Helmbold. So, Ms. Busch, why this academy now exactly?

Dr. Sabine Helmbold: Yes, I simply noticed, and I agree with Sabine Helmbold, that in the last few years, especially in the last two years, people have been getting worse and worse psychologically and mentally. These are indeed very, very challenging times in which we live. And it doesn’t matter whether you are for or against measures during the Corona pandemic, for example, or whether you are for or against vaccination. In general, so much is in upheaval and so much is happening that it’s a very, very big challenge for each of us and you really always have to take good care of yourself so that you stay centered. And I have simply noticed in the last few months that people are finding it increasingly difficult to stay centered and many are struggling with loneliness as a result of social distancing, which has been maintained in part over long weeks and months. It was already the case that in Germany alone, for example, we have, I think, 16 million single households, and before that many people were not really doing well psychologically due to various facts. And this problem has intensified massively in the last two years. And now I simply thought at the beginning of the year, I have the feeling that almost no one in my environment is doing really well psychologically and I also hear from many other colleagues in my environment that they are not doing well. And that’s why the Academy for Mental Health and Life Design.

Milena Preradovic: I read on the site that you also have personal experience with psychological problems. Could you briefly say something about that?

Corinna Busch: Well, I am what is called the war grandchild generation. There are also many good books that have been written about this, and I myself am actually a very, very typical member of this generation. I was always very, very good at functioning in my life. I come from a very simple home, from a working-class family, and both my mother was seriously mentally ill and later I had cancer. My father was an alcoholic and from a very young age I was always focused on functioning and taking care of others first and foremost, taking care of my parents. There were also serious physical assaults on the part of my mother and I myself have never been able to develop such a healthy self-esteem for myself, because I also always thought, I’m not good enough, I’m not good enough. And in order to have a right to exist somewhere at all, I always had to function very well. And that really went so far that, as a working-class child, I graduated from high school and, at the same time, took care of my mother, who was then seriously ill with cancer and died at home, and then went on to training, to the Federal Chancellery, and then to law school. So I really overtaxed myself permanently, also physically and mentally, and such a career in quotation marks, without coming from such a background and family or having had support there. That was only possible by permanently overtaxing myself, both physically and mentally.

Corinna Busch: And I have simply experienced of course, that I have worked with very many celebrities, very many successful people then later also together, that that is with almost all so one, such, such a workload, such also success and workload is only possible if one permanently overtaxes oneself, if one simply feels inwardly a certain emptiness and which can only compensate, either by this incredible work, which one does or by a consumption, in which one does by also unfortunately God’s alcohol drugs, I have experienced much in my environment and all that. At some point, I reached the point where I said, I’ve put so many things in the bottom drawer, they just don’t fit in that drawer anymore. Now let’s wind it up and look in there. And I believe that at the moment we are at such a point that this can be a real invitation for many people to open their own life drawer and to look at it. Because only in this way is further development first of all healing and then further development possible, because going back to an old world, that will no longer exist. We all have to develop further, develop further in our own responsibility. And yes, I believe that now is really the time to do something about it, because psychologically it is really enormous what you see and how badly people are doing in some cases.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, I think you have mentioned an important point. I have also had the experience that many people, especially successful people, feel the same way. Dr. Helmold, are these the people who are now also suffering particularly from this crisis, because they are perhaps already suffering from excessive demands or what? Which people have the biggest problems now in the last two years?

Dr. Sabine Helmbold: I think all those who are decoupled in the broadest sense from their emotional feelings and can be with themselves. It doesn’t matter if they are very successful and have a lot of stress in their job and have always been plodding along, or if they are in the wrong place in their life in the first place. It can be very simple professions, very simple activities, which nevertheless perhaps contribute to the fact that I do not perceive myself at all, do not know who I actually am, if all this falls away, what is then left of me? What is the quality of life in my life? What am I without work, without this hamster wheel that I am in, no matter what job I have? And I think that’s the chance of this crisis, to find my way back, to find myself, to define myself without these externalities, to really try to perceive what does me good, how much rest do I need, how much family do I need? What are really friendships for me? What is relaxation for me and how can I get there?

Milena Preradovic: I believe that especially people who are, as you call it, decoupled, have difficulties recognizing that. How can they come to that? How can they recognize what their true needs are? What is the way to get there?

Dr. Sabine Helmbold: Unfortunately, this path usually goes through pain. That means something has to come along that forces me to pause. That can be an illness, that can be a psychological history. It can be a crisis in a partnership, the loss of a job. It can be a depression that I just slip into. Yes, be a burnout, depending. Most of the time, people come to pause over manifest problems of a health or mental nature. They are forced into it. And for me, it’s also about saying that it’s not just about psychological care or about rebuilding people so that they can move on again. Above all, it’s about saying: What kind of awareness do I need now? What can I recognize? What is the message that is being sent to me practically? About my illness, about my depression, about this job loss, about the crisis in my partnership? What do I have to recognize? Where do I really stand? And through insight, a new path can be found. You don’t have to do it alone. That’s why we want to help. With such first steps first of all arrive, first of all a consultation, perhaps also get. First of all, let’s see where I am right now and how could I go on?

Milena Preradovic: Ms. Busch, how does it work if I am interested now and say that I like the two ladies very much? I would like to register at this academy or I would like to inform myself. What can I expect there?

Corinna Busch: Well, it’s actually quite simple on our homepage www.afmg.at, there’s also a tab at the top, so you can first get some brief general information. There is a tab at the top called “Become a member”, where you click on it and then there is the form, which you can download. But you can also send the information that is required there, of course, by email simply uncomplicated. Then we will take care of it. And the sponsoring membership fee is 240 € per year and for that you have the possibility to take advantage of psychological counseling twice a month. That is, they are at 10 € per psychological consultation, which is an extremely low contribution, because my vision, so to speak, is my concern that the community, the society contributes through donations to help others, to give something to others who need a support at the moment, because they are really very badly off, so that others can be helped first of all. But if they themselves possibly also in a few weeks or in a few months have the feeling, now I need also perhaps nevertheless also times so a little assistance, then again others from the society and from the community for them were there with donations. And then they can also take advantage of counseling themselves. So now you can donate just like that, but you can also. You can become a member, but at first you don’t get the advice, maybe you do it later. It is actually very uncomplicated, but my concern is really that in the sense of a new time, where we are hopefully slowly going, simply the society, the community first of all supports those who need it most urgently. But if they themselves, as I said, need support, then of course we are there for these people later.

Milena Preradovic: Dr. Helmbold, what is the point where you say “I need help”? That is also quite difficult. We have just said it, people don’t see their needs. They may not even realize their pain in the first place. They just continue to function. So what’s the point? Or how do I recognize that it might be a good idea to talk to professional people?

Dr. Sabine Helmbold: I don’t think you can generalize that much. Everyone really has to see that for themselves. I think that an offer, if it is there, also lowers the threshold to say, I’ll get in touch with them now! At the moment, the pressure situation is such that if you want to see a psychotherapist, for example, a doctor, you need a prescription, then you usually have to wait, you are on waiting lists. Or you can go to a psychotherapeutic non-medical practitioner, for example, who works in this way, but who then also costs a relatively large amount of money. These are inhibition thresholds that tend to keep people in lower income brackets away, who then really deny themselves this and say: “Oh, I’d rather just go to the doctor again, I’ll keep taking the sleeping pills or the painkillers. It’ll work out somehow.” And that’s why I believe that with low-threshold services we can catch people and tell them that it’s quite simple, you can simply make use of this counseling. It is also not necessary to do a long psychotherapy with us now. We can’t even do that. There are others for that, but I can first orient myself: “What can I do, what would perhaps be a first step in my case, what could help me”. And that is my concern, so to speak, what people see themselves, that is of course dependent on their openness in general. I believe that in a certain way we are facing a turning point, also in medicine and in the whole field of health, where we have to admit to ourselves that the spiritual things have been neglected for far too long. They are, so to speak, an additional tool that we get, if we have really been to the doctor long enough, then we may also contact the psychotherapist. That has to change. We need to understand and realize that the mind and the soul are the source of everything, of all my ailments, of all my body issues, of all my problematic issues that I have. And that is something that needs a rethinking, rethinking in our society and also in this time. And that is also for me personally my main concern to really participate in this change of times and to create a new awareness on the part of society, but also on the part of the doctors, the medical profession itself.

Milena Preradovic: You just said that physical complaints often or almost always have psychological causes. Can you perhaps explain that again briefly for the people who are not yet able to put it together.

Dr. Sabine Helmbold: Yes, it is quite simply our feelings, our mental situation is always something that does not remain without consequences. Even if we are unhappy and anxious, for example, and try to suppress that. Or we consume even more news and we go back to work and we just take the sleeping pill to be able to sleep. Then we try to cover up the real message of the soul, which is the anxious mood, the depression, the sadness, the unwillingness. But if we make it clear to ourselves that I first accept this feeling, it does not have to manifest itself in a physical problem. I have to come to understand it. I have to understand that these feelings, this unwillingness, the depressiveness, the anxiousness are a first sign to say to my soul “Hello, stop, something is going wrong with you, you are doing something wrong. Take a good look!” And not to ignore that ultimately means to spare the body. Because the soul doesn’t have to express itself in the body.

Milena Preradovic: And what diseases can arise? I would still be interested in that.

Dr. Sabine Helmbold: I assume all of them. So there is an old view that says psychosomatics is only a very specific area of diseases that arise from mental upsets. I say all illnesses have something to do with the soul. Yes, the body is the messenger of the soul. The body delivers the message of my soul to me. And I can learn to recognize the body illnesses in pictures, so to speak, and to read what my soul actually wants to tell me with it. That’s what I do when I’m not physically ill. And the other thing is, if I have mental problems, if I have mental upsets, if I’m depressed and anxious, to take these things seriously and to look closely at what I can change in my life, if only in my own attitude, so that it doesn’t have to develop into a physical illness. So these two starting points.

Milena Preradovic: Corona is a burning glass for many problems that were already there before. And that’s why I ask: What was the state of the people’s psyche before? I think there were already some problems.

Dr. Sabine Helmbold: Yes, you could say that. I think Corona is just making it visible now, because the events are really very concentrated and this story is already running in its third year. But what happened before, I can simply tell you a little bit about what I myself have experienced in practice, is that depression, for example, is on the rise, that it is now completely normal for many people to be set up with antidepressants, to perhaps take a sedative at night to go to bed, in order to be able to sleep at all, and then to have to function again. Yes, and people also who sat in my office, were sick and said, “Yes, I can’t do this job anymore.” And when I asked them yes, why do you do it then? “Yes, I still have to. I have five years left. Or I have seven years left”. It’s like serving a sentence somewhere, so to speak. For a long, long time, I think there has been a lack of realization: “I am responsible for myself. I can do something, I can also change something and get out of this hamster wheel”. And of course we have had that for years and decades, having to adapt everywhere, to do what others want me to do. That is also perhaps what I meant by decoupling. We are no longer with ourselves. We are where we fulfill something, where we do something that is expected of us and always in this council. That can’t be healthy in the long run and leads to corresponding problems. And it really takes the courage of people now to say, “I’m basically responsible for myself. I have to see what I can do for myself”, whether I have to take help for this or manage it alone, that is then again to be seen individually. But it cannot go on like this in any case. And that is nothing new. It’s basically an age-old issue.

Milena Preradovic: Mrs. Busch, you have made the experience and the problem is, on the one hand the psychological problems increase and on the other hand there is still this taboo. So you don’t go everywhere, you can go everywhere and say: “Hey, I’ve got the flu, or with Corona I’m…”, “Wow, tell me”, that almost makes it interesting, but you can’t peddle psychological problems very well.

Corinna Busch: A very big topic.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, how do you get a grip on that? How can you change that? I ask myself. It’s always when a celebrity possibly kills himself due to depression that it’s very briefly a topic in the newspapers and then it’s gone again. And I know how people talk and say: “There, he’s a bit of a mental case or he’s a bit crazy” or something like that, but it’s not taken seriously as an illness.

Corinna Busch: It’s a very, very big problem. There’s still a huge stigma attached to saying I’m going or have gone to therapy or have gotten support. For example, I also have celebrities who have come to me for counseling and so that was a huge issue. No one is allowed to know that, for God’s sake yet. Or some of them have sent their children to counseling because they don’t dare to talk to others because they have had a close personal relationship for many years. Because they don’t dare to talk to another therapist or counselor because they’re so worried that he or she might spread the word to the media. So some of these things are really adventurous. And it’s really the case that a lot of people feel almost insulted when you mention in a conversation that they could perhaps take a look at your story, possibly with support. How do you stand to it then? A lot of people jump in your face and you have to try to do that. Really. By bringing this more and more into the public eye, you have to try to stop it. I can only say from my own experience that it’s the best thing you can really do to yourself in a positive sense. What you can do to yourself if you work through your life story psychologically and get support. What you gain from it. That quality, that energy gain as well. Only I, for example, I am really without fear, I can actually say that today. And also the fear of serious illness. And I have experienced this very closely through my mother, I was twelve years old, when in addition to her depressions and traumas she became seriously ill with breast cancer. And she died of this disease seven years later. But I myself really came into such a power and energy with my life story through my reappraisal, through the healing that I was able to go into, and I have never been afraid or worried even now during the last two years, and I am not afraid of death, by the way. I always say that people who are afraid of death are mainly those who do not live their real life. If you consciously live your life every day the way you want it and don’t live the life that others expect of you, then you are really in your real life, in the here and now. And that is the big challenge. So not living in the past and also not living in the future, but living in the now and encouraging people to try that. This is perhaps only at the beginning, when you look at your life story, it can of course be a bit painful and unpleasant. But then very quickly come such wonderful new energy, gains and successes and you look at your life very differently. You also slow down, by the way. For example, I can’t imagine today, I used to work 70, 80 hours a week. I crisscrossed the world. And I think, Sabine, that we also agree a bit. Today we sometimes look at each other and say, we actually did that? We’d like to endure that more today, because it’s crazy. The pace at which most people still travel and live, because our natural pace is actually medium to slow. We are not these always higher, always faster and always further people, but we are actually rather a bit leisurely and comfortable. I think when you also experience people who have successfully completed this and you also keep learning, you keep dealing with yourself. But when other people perhaps realize: “Oh look, even now in these times, look, she’s always in a good mood, she’s positive, she’s optimistic. We, how did she manage that? Or others too? Do we maybe try it too?” So really talking about it, really putting it out there and you don’t have to be ashamed, it’s nothing negative and you’re not inferior. So you have to push all that far away from you, but that’s something wonderful when you say at that point: “Come on, now I have to pull open my drawer and take a look at it”.

Milena Preradovic: Exactly. That’s the only way to develop personally. I have to agree with you there. I also had four years of therapy. I needed that, too, and I’ve been doing much, much better since then, I must say. So, ladies, thank you both very much. I wish very much success for your academy. I think, I hope it will grow soon, because I think there is a lot of need for a lot of people. And toi, toi, toi. All the best. Thank you for the interview.

Dr. Sabine Helmbold: We thank you.

Corinna Busch: Thank you very much. Thank you.

Milena Preradovic: Well, guys, how can it actually be that our psyche of this policy is so completely unimportant right now? Have you ever heard Karl Lauterbach talk about suicidal children? About illness caused by loneliness? Probably not. There is only one topic of conversation and that is actually completely crazy, that it should only be about health and Corona. So I think each of us can do something and can also help with a lot of empathy and understanding for the people who are close to us. That was now quasi like the word to the Sunday. I wish you a good time. See you soon.
