Das ist Deutschland heute: from hero to zero. Jetzt in Punkt Preradovic. Hallo Antje Hermenau.

Antje Hermenau: Guten Tag.

Antje Hermenau: Also ich habe folgendes beobachtet.

Milena Preradovic: Hm.

Antje Hermenau: Also am Ende.

Antje Hermenau: Leider, ganz furchtbar.

Also ganz banalen Dingen.

Also so viel Umdreherei muss man ja erst mal zustande bringen im Kopf.

Also so ein Affentheater.

Also so was Verrücktes.

Milena Preradovic: Aha.

Antje Hermenau: Keine Ahnung.

“I am not convinced”.

Milena Preradovic: Was heißt das genau?

Antje Hermenau: So ungefähr. Also da muss man aufpassen.

Milena Preradovic: Genau, da muss man aufpassen.

Milena Preradovic: Wieder optimieren.

Milena Preradovic: Also okay.

Also wollen Sie wirklich wissen?

Milena Preradovic: Ja, sicher.

Antje Hermenau: Ja. Gut. Die USA, die Royal Navy, die Polen, die Deutschen und die Russen. Es ist alles denkbar.

Milena Preradovic: Ist alles denkbar.

Man denkt, man gehört zusammen.

Also da hatten sie meine Aufmerksamkeit.

Antje Hermenau: Bitte?

Milena Preradovic: Eine Tiktok-Ausbildung.

Was halten Sie denn..?

Milena Preradovic: Jung bleiben?

Milena Preradovic: Also einfach mal so.

Interview with Antje Hermenau (english)

Milena Preradovic: Horrendous energy prices are driving small and medium-sized businesses into bankruptcy and large companies abroad. Citizens should save gas and electricity. Poor people can no longer afford butter and inflation eats away at savings. That is Germany today: from hero to zero. If you ask the traffic lights, only Putin is to blame for everything. And therefore Russia must be defeated and ruined, according to the Green Party’s Baerbock. And so, of all things, the former peace party is demanding more and more weapons for Ukraine. The Greens now determine the zeitgeist and the issues. Top priority: saving the climate, whatever the cost, including prosperity and democracy. Where is this leading? Are the Greens perhaps even dangerous? We need to talk about that. And the best way to do that is with a woman who helped shape the party’s policies for 25 years and then turned her back on it. Now in point Preradovic. Hello Antje Hermenau.

Antje Hermenau: Good afternoon.

Milena Preradovic: Let me introduce you briefly. You are a politician, an entrepreneur, a graduate teacher of German and English language and literature, and an administrative scientist, as well as an author and political consultant. You are a co-founder of the Green Party of Saxony and were a member of the Round Table of the City of Leipzig during the Wende in 1990. From 1990 to 1994 you sat as a member of the Saxon state parliament. From 94 to 2004 in the German Bundestag. Then you moved back to Saxony as a parliamentary group leader in the state parliament. In 2014, you resigned from all political offices and then at the beginning of 2015, after 25 years, from the Green Party. Since then you have been self-employed. Your latest book is called “Das große Egal”. So, I have read your book and it is very interesting and it is also a reckoning with the Green zeitgeist, with paternalism, with freedom of opinion, with economic and energy policy aberrations. You have now been in the party for 25 years. Who has changed? You or the Greens?

Antje Hermenau: Probably both in the end. I had the great fortune of being on the Budget Committee in the Bundestag. And the numbers are very sobering. So I had a very sober environment and didn’t have to fight with pseudo-discussions like in some other fields. That made life easier for me. But on the other hand, when you have these insights into the realities, and that’s what the Budget Committee is, then you realize that something is wrong. That’s why I was very happy to go back to the provinces in first place and then I fought my way into the Landtag myself to implement what I had learned.

Milena Preradovic: That doesn’t seem to have been entirely successful, otherwise you probably wouldn’t have resigned, would you? Well, yes.

Antje Hermenau: Well, it went relatively well for ten years, and of course there was always friction. There are always those who can do better. That’s normal. I think the break came above all with the issue of the debt brake. I fought very hard to get them into the Saxon constitution. A strict debt brake like that, not the larifari of the federal government and many other states. And that did lead to a certain break with many Greens in Saxony.

Milena Preradovic: Hm. Green Germany is now also swinging up to be the savior of the climate. And it’s doing so worldwide. Fossil fuels are to go, nuclear power too. That’s quite a special path when you look at other countries. Do you believe in the Greens’ energy transition with wind and sun?

Antje Hermenau: In the meantime, I think it’s all a bit of a wrong-way street. I believe that we can produce a lot of energy with sun and wind. We just have to use it differently, store it and not feed it into the grid. So if we think of it as a cycle, you can produce energy very well with wind and sun on stock and store it and then use it when you need it in smaller cycles. But the grid and grid stability are just too compromised when you take the other players out. This is what we are seeing now with the stress test due to the loss of gas supplies, that this energy transition, as it has been set up, is not working. It is dead.

Milena Preradovic: So the energy transition needed Russian gas, especially because it was relatively cheap. So do you think the exit was a mistake? Also that Nordstream 2 was not put into effect?

Antje Hermenau: Well, I think that Russian gas was also important as a cost factor. Germany already had the highest energy costs because of the shutdowns that had already taken place in the power plant sector and the addition of solar and wind power. And the Russian cheap pipeline gas made it bearable for industry. And now that that’s gone, only willingly. I think Mrs. Baerbock was the first to say that we could easily do without Russian gas, but now we have the problem that we no longer have the cheap counterpart. Nuclear power could at least be the counterpart in Germany to ensure grid stability, because the German nuclear power plants have a patent from Siemens that makes it possible to regulate them up and down. That means they can follow the different feed-in rates of wind and solar. That would also be possible, of course you would have to want that.

Milena Preradovic: And the Greens don’t want that.

Antje Hermenau: Obviously not. So old father Trittin still seems to have all the strings in his hand. I always think it’s cute when young girls in the Greens are always going around saying they’re fed up with the old white men. Trittin runs the regime.

Milena Preradovic: Oh really?

Antje Hermenau: It’s true, you can see that in this decision. For me, actually, the political capability of the Greens at the federal level is linked to this Gretchen question of the use of nuclear energy.

Milena Preradovic: Hm, hm. After all, the traffic light is just risking the prosperity of the country with its energy policy. Why?

Antje Hermenau: That’s a good question that many can’t really answer. There are many who are puzzling. She’s not the only one. I think it’s important that the population feels for once that this policy doesn’t work in the end. Obviously, this is even a calculation with one or the other. The SPD can also look for other coalition partners. It doesn’t have to govern with the Greens and the FDP. It has only chosen to do so. And if the emergency is greater, it can be. We’ll get another grand coalition with the signs reversed. That’s also conceivable. Not out of the question in my eyes. Then Mr. Merz would have to jump over his vanity shadow, but in essence that would be possible. And the question is perhaps whether Mr. Scholz is also counting on the Greens simply coming to their senses on this issue. And maybe there are already some Greens who think, okay, we’re better off with nuclear than with the Russian power plants. That could all be discussed. But that’s not how it’s being discussed. And nobody knows what is going on behind the scenes.

Milena Preradovic: But I don’t have the impression that the SPD, which would be particularly opposed to the decisions of the Green Minister of Economics, or?

Antje Hermenau: Well, I have observed the following. Scholz completely withdrew at the very beginning of this coalition. First of all, he let everyone else step forward onto the stage and perform their play, so to speak. For better or for worse. He let them do their thing and for a few months now, Mr. Scholz has started to give a witty interview here and to put things in order there. For example, the Airbus order by the Chinese, so a two-hour audience in Beijing had. That is already not bad to come back with over 16 billion € order for Airbus and Boeing so to speak on the place. This means that Scholz may be someone who first lets everyone else shoot their powder and then slowly comes out of the closet. That is quite conceivable.

Milena Preradovic: But the nuclear debate is over. Actually.

Antje Hermenau: The nuclear discussion is over. He spoke a chancellor’s word and still you will have to correct yourself if you can’t maintain the power system.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, I’m very curious about that.

Antje Hermenau: In the end, in the end, the facts are always the facts.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, but don’t you have the impression that the Green Party, let’s say, puts ideology above facts?

Antje Hermenau: That’s why it’s the Gretchen question. Nuclear energy will show whether they are fit to govern or not. The three-rowed stool doesn’t make it.

Milena Preradovic: Hm.

Antje Hermenau: So in the end. That’s exactly the Gretchen question. In the end, the nuclear issue will prove the Greens’ ability to govern. Are you ready to correct yourself, or are you not? In any case, the three-parter alone won’t do it.

Milena Preradovic: The big issue is also money. So for the last three years, money has been spread around with big hands. First in the matter of Corona, now to protect citizens from high energy prices. A lot is being brought into Ukraine. Can this go well in the long run, that so much money is simply spent? Scholz used to be the guardian of the debt brake.

Antje Hermenau: Well, the question is, what do you spend the money on? Unfortunately, these are not investments that will pay off sooner or later. It’s consumer spending or money given away to the needy. The problem is that the electricity prices we have now are partly the fault of politicians themselves. They could be quite a bit lower if the nuclear plants, the last six were still running. For example, LNG was bought at the highest price and stored in order to fill the storage facilities. But whether you own all that is still an open question. And it’s not enough, because the storage facilities cover about 25% of annual gas consumption in Germany, and 75% of that consumption occurs in the winter months, so to speak, so it’s not enough anyway, and hardly any new gas comes in, at least not as much as would be needed. So all in all, this is not well thought out. It makes no sense from an economic or business point of view. It shows that the entire coalition is not sufficiently informed about fundamental market processes. This is a broad analysis. This is not about one person, but it is a broad analysis. Economics and finance are obviously political stepchildren in the majority of this coalition. But since that means butter and bread, it’s actually existential. At least for the people who classify themselves as conservative or center-right. And there it’s a matter of existence, and for businesses and for craftsmen anyway. And that’s a completely different matter from arguing about whether jam, sausage, cheese or tofu should go on top when you’re doing well and there’s plenty of bread and butter available. And center left understands itself evenly only on these questions of jam, sausage, cheese and tofu. That is the problem.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, the reality is that people who already have little money can no longer afford butter. Butter is partly already secured in supermarkets. Do you think that these politicians in Berlin still have any connection to the needs of the people, to the simple people, that is, the people with little money?

Antje Hermenau: At the moment we have a lot of blanket judgments, so I’m always cautious. In every industry, in every profession, there is such and such a person. Of course, it’s easier to deal with inflation if you get a five-figure sum in your account at the end of the month, then you can bear that. With people where it’s a tight four figures, that’s a tricky question. And you just have to see that. On the other hand, there are colleagues or there were colleagues in the Bundestag who were in their constituency offices, who talked to the people and had a certain idea of the needs. And then there are colleagues who perhaps also have areas of expertise that do not reach so many citizens. And then there is a lack of insight into other realities of life.

Milena Preradovic: The people in the Ahr Valley still have their needs, too.

Antje Hermenau: Unfortunately, quite terribly.

Milena Preradovic: They are still waiting for the big construction, the people and see how insanely much money is spent. Sent to Ukraine. In every aid package, Germany is there with millions, billions. It’s about saving the world, saving Ukraine. Do you understand the displeasure of many citizens?

Antje Hermenau: Well, I myself have complained time and again in public that so little progress is being made in the Ahr Valley. A lot of private donations have been made, but they haven’t really reached the people yet. That is still a problem. You can’t imagine in Germany that it takes more than a year to make any progress at all. If you look at the current documentaries about the Ahr valley, you think of the flood before this summer and not last year. And politics has taken very limited responsibility for what happened overall. I’m really, I reflected that in my book as well, in the “great no matter.” I am really amazed that it is possible to remain prime minister, to remain minister in the face of such events. In the meantime, there have already been two ministers who were forced to resign. I think that was more of a passive process. That’s crazy. At the time of reunification, I thought to myself, “Super, now we’re going to have a constitutional state and a functioning democracy. I was full of anticipation. I also fought very actively to make us popular in my home country, because I think that’s good. And then I notice such mismanagement, so to speak, in the old home territory of the Federal Republic of Germany, and I am amazed, forbass amazed. And it all really has something to do with this great Egal that I’m describing. This center-left faction, which is somewhere else in its head, has succeeded in making many people in this country indifferent to what was important to them. And then that leads to passivity and withdrawal.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, once indifferent and once climate change. They simply said that the Ahr valley was climate change. We can do nothing for it.

Antje Hermenau: Yes, but that is absurd talk. Even the Minister of the Interior in North Rhine-Westphalia put it right by making it clear that there was also a lack of alarm sirens. So quite banal things. Yes, and that there were major omissions in this area. And he also said that across the border to the Rhineland-Palatinate. That affected not only his southern North Rhine-Westphalia and I have already perceived everything. So this method of blaming everything on something else and never being responsible ourselves is something we also had in the past. It was called collective responsibility. No one was to blame.

Milena Preradovic: Are we going back to a GDR of that kind?

Antje Hermenau: Well, the older ones among us have a bundled measure of deja vus, anyway, and we also have a whole series of jokes by now. I think the most brutal of all is actually to say, “Well, it’s their first dictatorship. We have to be lenient with the West Germans”.

Milena Preradovic: Do you actually think West Germans are more naive than East Germans? Because, let’s say, protests against government policies and against the unreasonableness of the government, they are very big in the East. Of course, there are also protests in the West. But in the West there are also very, very many who continue to believe that this government wants the best for them. Are they more naive? Are we Westerners naive?

Antje Hermenau: I wouldn’t want to make it that easy for myself. I think it plays a role that trust in democratic institutions has grown over decades. And that’s there as a result of progress in civilization. This is not yet as stable in the East. But there are many who want democracy and the rule of law and take to the streets because they see them violated, by the way, and not because they are against them. People like to misinterpret that, I think on purpose. The point I’m trying to make is that you always can’t imagine something that hasn’t happened in your own lifetime. And many West Germans simply haven’t experienced that yet, how such a dictatorship sneaks into power and then wants to stay there. And that’s why it will probably take a while to realize all this. And this dictatorship doesn’t come along and say, “I am the dictatorship,” but says, “I defend democracy and therefore decide where things go. So you first have to be able to turn things around that much in your head.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, and it’s like Orwell’s neologism: everything means something else. Democracy is being defended by the fact that Nancy Fraser, the Minister of the Interior, wants to be able to dismiss dissidents, she calls them enemies of the state, from the civil service much more quickly.

Antje Hermenau: Also this suppression of demonstrations, this call to let it go. So the Greens, the Antifa, they were out on the streets in all weathers, in all circumstances, demonstrating. And it wasn’t anti-democratic there? And now, when the other side says: “No, friends, you’re overdoing it, you’re exaggerating, we have to defend ourselves, we’ll make it public,” then all of a sudden they’re enemies of democracy. So it’s a charade.

Milena Preradovic: You have described the Green Party as a kind of sect. What do you base that on?

Antje Hermenau: Well, it is a self-contained cosmos. There are strict rules about what you’re allowed to do and what you’re not allowed to do. There are also language rules that are prescribed. I find that remarkable. Otherwise, there are quasi-religious traits. There’s a kind of messianic mission, the mission to end climate change, although you can’t do that. Then there are prophets of this whole thing. There are also the heretic persecutors and the witch burnings. Medially, anyway. It’s all there, actually. And I deeply regret that, because there are also many smart people tied up with the Greens. And you’d just have to get them out of the woods and stand them up and say, “Look at the trees,” that would help a lot, but that’s not possible now, because of course the Greens are now under fire, and we know that from dealing with the Left and the PDS here in the East, then they move together and then nothing works. That is hardening right now.

Milena Preradovic: Does that mean that the smart people are subordinating themselves?

Antje Hermenau: Well, I don’t think that they are aware of all the green talk around it, and that it’s only now that we have to strongly seek contact with other parts of the population. The agenda setting was successful. You were elected for the issue of renewable energies, for example. Now it’s a matter of implementing all these ideas, so to speak. And there are many, many difficulties and problems on the ground. And at that moment, they pull back, berate everyone else as climate deniers and I don’t know what else. And the point is actually to describe what is feasible and then to implement it. But the Greens are simply not getting involved. And that’s where sectarianism begins for me.

Milena Preradovic: Before the last election, the Greens advertised that they would not send weapons to war zones, and they were once considered a major peace party. Now they are the biggest supporters of sending weapons to Ukraine and are still pushing Scholz ahead of them, so to speak. How do you explain that?

Antje Hermenau: I puzzled over that for a long time. I would never have thought that a Toni Hofreiter could dance the names of all the tanks personally, loosely based on Rudolf Steiner. But on the other hand, I think that with the Greens the idea prevails that in their eyes liberal, but actually rather a libertarian idea, almost an anarchic idea of freedom would be threatened. And the liberal democracies have to justify themselves, so to speak, whether they are able to deal with difficult times or whether these are all just light sailors and fair weather sailors in democracy. And that’s where I think they already feel they have to protect what they think is a liberal democracy, which doesn’t necessarily have to be one, but they think it is, they now have to protect it by all means and with all due force. And if one had to take up arms. “Peace must be armed,” the GDR people used to say. Is actually the same thing.

Milena Preradovic: That’s crazy, yes.

Antje Hermenau: Yes, I say yes, we have one smirking evening after the other here with the red wine. We smirk to ourselves, we don’t even talk anymore. There’s no point. It’s now the phase where the child has to grab onto the hot stove. We have nothing to cough up now.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, super. And all the rest has to suffer.

Antje Hermenau: Yes, we all regret that here very much. The material drop in the East is lower than in the West on average. So we are more likely to clap.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, but they will also probably or the people in the East may also be more able to deal with it. That’s kind of what I think. But you just talked about freedom, about a liberal democracy. Do you really have the impression that freedom is a priority with the Greens? That is, the Greens also stand for absolute regulation. Whether that’s regulation of industry in terms of climate change. They have defended all Corona measures to the hilt. Are the Greens a freedom-loving party?

Antje Hermenau: At least we used to be. I know that many civic-minded people joined the Greens, they merged to form Bündnis 90-Grüne. And, of course, the guiding principles were civil rights and individual freedoms and the rule of law. That is quite clear. And I think we tried to develop that for a long time. That stopped a few years ago. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why I left, without being able to describe it so precisely at the time. The feeling of constriction, of forbidding mouths and not saying that and not being allowed to say that. And that’s the wrong, wrong signal. So constantly such calls, if one wanted to agree seriously on the matter, with the partners from other parties, who think differently. It really got on my nerves, to be honest, that they only wanted to limit me to the Greens themselves and not to any contacts in other arenas. So I can tell it by an example. At that time, the parliamentary group had decided, because I had made it a habit to smoke a cigarillo with my colleague from the CDU, the parliamentary group leader Steffen Flath, in the inner courtyard of the state parliament from time to time and talk about a few things. There the decided parliamentary group that I may not make that in the future any more, because it is the wrong political signal, namely a black green signal. So I picked up my cell phone during the group meeting and called Steffen, as it’s also called. He shows you, we’re going to Rome, and they’re just turning free again. So something crazy.

Milena Preradovic: Aha. Yes, that’s not freedom, that has dictatorial features. That is, of course, completely absurd.

Antje Hermenau: And all that didn’t suit me anymore. I also offered not to be the leader of the parliamentary group anymore. Then you said, “Nah, you’d better get on with it.” Then I offered not to run again. “No, we don’t have one, you’d better get on with it”. Because in 2013, Trittin was the mastermind of the election campaign at the federal level. And there they were divinely shipped off, because taxes were just not a Green issue, you should keep your hands off. And in Saxony, the Greens still had 4.9%, and then they got into trouble for 2014 in the state parliament, because they couldn’t get in. Then they had no choice but to take me. But even then always so on and I found it all unworthy. And I just don’t need that in my life.

Milena Preradovic: So then better the heretic than to lose.

Antje Hermenau: I don’t know. Yes, that’s how it looks. So in case of doubt all means are right, but as soon as you are in power, then the freedom is first and foremost that of your own way of thinking. And that, I think, is too short in the end if you want to govern.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, that’s what strikes me very hard about the Greens. The Greens are now firmly on the side of the USA. That’s a bit surprising. Since when has that been the case?

Antje Hermenau: Yes, I was also surprised, because there was also a large group in the Greens that was satisfied that Schröder and Fischer said at the time that we would not take part in the Iraq war. “I am not convinced. That was absolutely right. And I thought that was a great moment in security policy and foreign policy. That makes me all the more surprised. But as I said, I have not been involved in the discussions for a number of years, eight years now. And I simply don’t know what tactical and strategic issues are being discussed on the boards of any of them. I am surprised to learn that the Greens, whom I left behind, were quite different.

Milena Preradovic: Your book is called “Das große Egal. And many citizens now have the impression that the government doesn’t care about them, especially the Greens. That’s what Foreign Minister Baerbock said. Very clever, somehow. How do the Greens see themselves? Do they still see themselves as representatives of the sovereign, the citizen?

Antje Hermenau: I think they consider the clientele they represent, which seems to vote for them with a constant 15 to 20 percent, to be the part of the people whose interests absolutely have to be represented. I think you also decided that tactically, because if you actually focus on a core clientele, like the FDP, then the election results are more stable than if they try to appear like a people’s party, which they would not admit to themselves and which they are not. And that, I think, is the strategic crux in which they find themselves. On the one hand, they have to make sure that they keep their core voters, and on the other hand, they have to make sure that they don’t look too far for other voters and alienate their core voters. And then they prefer to be everywhere, even in the countries with ten, 15 or 20 %, and have their say. In governments, than to try but to get to 30 or 35%, but to give up their their sectarian policies to do that. And that’s where they’ve decided, I think, strategically, how it’s going to go. And that’s why the ability of the Greens to govern in the long term is also in question.

Milena Preradovic: Maybe it’s hard to get out of such a sect.

Antje Hermenau: Yes, you can see that the country needs a conservative correction. Most people hang over the railing and feed the fish because they can’t take all the swings on the boat anymore. And the joke of it all, though, is that the Greens want to steer in even more. It’s supposed to go even faster around the bend and that’s too much for people. It makes them sick to their stomach and that’s where we need a conservative correction.

Milena Preradovic: What does that mean exactly? Was my last question, by the way, but then we’ll build it in right now. What do you mean by a conservative correction?

Antje Hermenau: This agenda of this government is liable to unsettle people to the core. And you can’t do that if you have to tackle a reform or several reforms in this country. And that’s what you have to do, because they’ve been prolonged long enough with Merkel’s snooze button. Then it is important that the people are not questioned in their innermost being and in their foundations. And that concerns the whole revolutionary processes of gender language in identification and in individualism. All these things that sort of break down what makes your everyday life important and round for you personally. If you question or destroy or interfere with all of that, so to speak, then there is no will for reform on the part of the population. Where is that going to come from? They’re busy sorting out their bread and butter issues. It could also be that it’s intentional, that people are supposed to be distraught so that they care about bread and butter issues and don’t realize that just around it everything else is being rebuilt and papered over. I don’t know that, I’m not sure about that. But in any case, for reforms that are to be sustainable, that are to be broadly supported and that are to be permanent, you need stable, secure people and not insecure ones.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, that’s exactly what I asked myself. I asked myself: What is the point of this identity politics, which divides people into victims and perpetrators according to race, skin color and origin? Gendering, which people do not want, most people…

Antje Hermenau: Quite a lot of people don’t want that. 80% or so. Quite a lot.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, I think on Stern TV they were at over 90% in the live poll and then they said that you still have to work a lot so that people come to an understanding. I found that quite interesting. But it is also the case that there are now so many biological sexes, or there should be. That also came out of the box for me like Kai. I think, where do all the biological genders come from?

Antje Hermenau: There are only two. Don’t get confused.

Milena Preradovic: Of course, I don’t really let myself be unsettled. But also that you also want to talk children before puberty also or say you: “if you are unsure in which sex you are, you can also still stop it somehow with puberty blockers”. That means that even the youngest are made insecure. And of course I also asked myself, is that the agenda?

Antje Hermenau: I don’t know exactly. I am careful not to make such a judgment without being able to prove it.

Milena Preradovic: But what do you think about identity politics?

Antje Hermenau: I have one observation that perhaps holds something back. And that is that many of the players, not only in the Green Party, but also in the Social Democrats, are people who have their own private history of emancipation behind them, in various ways, where it was a matter of wanting to be who they believe they are. And for some of them, this dragged on for a long time until they were in their 40s or 50s. Some even gave up having children. So that was very different, and I think that’s the core of this generation and these people, that they think that everyone needs this individual story of emancipation. But there are quite a few who are completely content with the situation they are born into. They don’t have the problem at all, but they are persuaded that there must be someone else who is as strangely different as me or something. I think that plays a big role. I would definitely include that in the observation. And whether there are any bad fingers that want to dissolve all families and isolate all people and turn them into monads. So the monad theory was around 200 years ago. I’m not quite sure that there are really that many bad fingers. I rather think it’s a mixture of misunderstood tolerance, which actually means ignorance. Out of the feeling of having worked out for oneself in one’s life what is important in life and wanting to help everyone else over. There is a massive helper syndrome, I am also convinced. But the joke is…

Milena Preradovic: Like the grandma who is carried across the street, even though she doesn’t want to.

Antje Hermenau: Something like that. So the individual emancipation process is by far not something that you can or should apply to masses. It is individual. So that’s already very complex, I think. But of course there are also clearly communists, Maoists, who now look a bit more bourgeois, as I said in the three-parter, but who of course have a more Marxist-Leninist basic understanding of society, who now invoke the solidarity community. Whenever someone talks about the solidarity community, they have to be careful. He really only means that the group will let itself be steered by him to do what he wants. So you have to be careful.

Milena Preradovic: Oh yes, I was already paying attention in the Corona crisis, when suddenly there was talk of solidarity for vaccination.

Antje Hermenau: Yes, yes.

Milena Preradovic: Exactly, you have to pay attention. It’s just like “Defend democracy”, you always have to pay attention there, too. But you just said, maybe this identity politics is due to the problems of individual people. But then you ask yourself, why is the whole country going along with it, with just a few exceptions? Well, that’s politics, entrepreneurship. Everybody is in on it.

Antje Hermenau: At least I have different perceptions of entrepreneurs here. There are always entrepreneurs here…

Milena Preradovic: With large companies, identity politics is one of the monstrances that has been paraded in front of them in the meantime, yes.

Antje Hermenau: All right, but the internationally active companies have a different way of dealing with different people of different origins anyway. That’s what they have to do when they operate internationally. And then there’s the fact that a large corporation doesn’t really care whether we have democracy, capitalism or socialism here. They are beyond the scope of what the state regulates in detail anyway. They don’t care, the main thing is that the workforce is there and the investment conditions are favorable. I would have no illusions that internationally operating corporations would take into account how concretely things are organized in a state. That is an illusion. And the Greens, for example, tend to always look at all these large corporations when working with the business community. And the managers are appointed for a few years. That’s different from, for example, a medium-sized businessman who inherited the company from his father, who is connected to the region, who is connected to the people who work for him. That’s a completely different story, and it’s always confused, even by players in federal politics. And I think that’s really a shame, not to say shameless, because we all live from the fact that there are enough people here, that’s over 2 million, who create jobs in Germany and hire people. Subject to social security contributions. We have about 4 million entrepreneurs in Germany, a little bit less since Corona. Of that, just under half were solo self-employed. That’s gone down a bit, and we just have plenty of 2 million people who hire other people in their companies.

Milena Preradovic: Still.

Antje Hermenau: But they pull the cart. They give wages and bread to about 20 million people, and the taxes that they all pay together, they have another 15 million who also pay taxes, but from other people’s taxes. So you just have to look, bread and butter, I’m back at it. What is the core structure of this state? We have to remove all the tinsel and put down all the rococo. And then you can look at what the basic structure of our state is, which is the welfare state. Otherwise, Germans can’t stand capitalism, that’s quite clear. Second, there’s the rule of law. In my opinion, this could be further optimized.

Milena Preradovic: Optimize again.

Antje Hermenau: Yes, I think it was better before. That’s right and that’s also the idea of competition. And the fact that many are now saying nothing and not budging is that they are disturbed to the core, because it is precisely these foundations that are being shaken. The social systems are not only being shaken by demographics – it’s partly your own fault if you don’t have any children – but there’s also the question of immigration into the social systems and the decreasing payments. Anyone who got halfway through math in school, even in the tenth grade, will be able to calculate that if you take out more than you put in, the pot will run out. Everybody can calculate that and that’s why no specialists come, because of course they can also calculate if they are specialists. And then they know that they pay in for current older Germans. And even if they get nothing when they’re old, they don’t think it’s funny. So that’s a problem and people notice that and they can imagine that. And the same applies to the question of the rule of law or where you say, well, the service person there in the store has been counted because of some discount voucher of one Euro 90 or what that was some kind of pipifax and now you find here somehow sackfuls of cash with a deputy president of the EU Parliament or so. So this is absurd stuff.

Milena Preradovic: Did that surprise you?

Antje Hermenau: Yes, it surprised even me and I’m really hard-nosed. Yes. It did. The size of the sum, the size of the sum, not the bribery per se, I always consider that. But the size of the sum, and that is then somehow still hoarded at home in bags and bottles, I find that quite striking.

Milena Preradovic: Do you also find, let’s say, it surprised you to hear from Ms. von der Leyen how surprised she is about corruption in the EU?

Antje Hermenau: No, that’s part of your role.

Milena Preradovic: So okay. Maybe all this is also meant to distract a bit from the investigations against Ms. von der Leyen?

Antje Hermenau: Well, she’s always like that, that she screams the day it comes out and then nothing happens. That was also the case with the blasting of the pipelines in the Baltic Sea. We will hold them all accountable. This is a crime. Bam, bam, bam. And then nothing more came. To this day, it’s still unclear who did it. And the list of suspects, well, my personal one includes five possible forces. So you really want to know?

Milena Preradovic: Yes, for sure.

Antje Hermenau: Yes. Good. The United States, the Royal Navy, the Poles, the Germans, and the Russians. It’s all conceivable.

Milena Preradovic: It’s all conceivable. Oskar Lafontaine said here at this point that for him it was completely certain that it would be the USA. Also because Joe Biden said, “so Nord Stream two we will prevent then”.

Antje Hermenau: In the summer, they also carried out maneuvers in the Baltic Sea with diving units, showing how to attach such explosive charges. That was somehow coincidental two months before. But the Royal Navy is well trained. The Poles have reason. The Germans may have some, too. Some of them, anyway. I don’t know. I don’t. It could have been the Russians to blame it on the others. But they’re fifth in my book. You know, right at the back, at the top are the U.S. and the U.K.

Milena Preradovic: But I would also say, I mean to blame the others, to blow up their own pipeline. And then nothing happens and nobody is blamed for anything.

Antje Hermenau: I didn’t take it off the list for the sake of order.

Milena Preradovic: Okay. You just briefly alluded to the issue of immigration migration and that’s where Greens are mobilizing with the Social Democrats as well. That is, you want to open the country for, well, actually for all, for all and so the shortage of skilled workers would be eliminated. That’s just window dressing, isn’t it?

Antje Hermenau: We have been smarter since 2015. We have the statistics and know who all of the refugees who came to Germany were able to find jobs that were subject to social security contributions. And seven years later, it is quite clear that just under a third, or even less, have actually made it. And the other 2/3 are being dragged through the social system. And the proportion of Hartz IV recipients has also shifted in favor of, let’s say, immigrants, to about half. It’s all obvious, it’s all transparent and visible. In other European countries, too. That’s why I opened the mirror to Europe and the western industrialized countries in my book. The discussion we are having is also taking place in other countries in one form or another. And if you look at how much the eastern part of Central Europe is reluctant to take part in this immigration issue, also because they want to preserve their cultures, so to speak, which they have only recently won back. 30 years is not long. I think you can understand that very well. Orban once said somewhat cheekily: “Yes, the former West of Europe has moved to the East. What the West is now, I don’t know”. Pretty close, I would say. And I think it all has something to do with the old hate images of this generation of politicians, who are of the opinion that the conservatives or the liberal conservatives are some kind of fascists in disguise, that you have to fight them all, and that what they think is right, I must automatically think is wrong. So you come to the parliamentary group meeting and say, “What does the CDU say about this? I’m definitely against it. How do we formulate that?”. So that’s such absurd stuff.

Milena Preradovic: Is that really so banal, is that really so?

Antje Hermenau: I once experienced it like that. So I think it’s all absurd. And I think that biting into the old enemy and hate images leads to the fact that one is not able to recognize and understand the learning progress on the other side and also does not lead to the understanding that the center right is now threatened in its existence, so to speak. And that’s where they’re now slowly becoming rabid. I explained earlier that they are not taking to the streets, with the insecurity to the core. But the rejection and the loss of confidence in the active politicians at the moment is enormous. It had already grown under Mrs. Merkel’s government. The current government is not solely to blame for this. But the loss of trust is enormous. And the more such figures appear, who constantly trample on certain self-evident things because they don’t know them or because they hate them, the more difficult it will be to rebuild these bridges.

Milena Preradovic: Anyone who talks like you is now pushed into the right-wing or radical right-wing corner in the best Germany ever.

Antje Hermenau: I have heard that there have also been applications for the burning of witches.

Milena Preradovic: You write in your book: “the population was cleverly divided into AfD and non-AfD. And within the non-AfD there is no real democratic exchange of opinions anymore.” I take it from that that you think that was the intention to split the population like that?

Antje Hermenau: But yes, that was welcome. So that’s very welcome. You have de-teamed the CDU, if you will excuse the expression, by forbidding you to even smoke a cigarette or have a conversation with the AfD. The result is that the CDU is now vagabonding back and forth between fish and flesh and doesn’t really belong anywhere. The urban CDU definitely feels connected to the center-left milieu with the more conservative Greens or something. People think they belong together. Only then, when it comes to crucial issues, do you realize that there is a big difference between a conservative approach to life and a libertarian one. But that’s not always emphasized in such a way. Now we are entering a time when the questions are becoming more pointed again. And we will either see the CDU dissolve into nothingness, just plop and then it’s gone. Or it will come to its senses and give conservatives who feel homeless a home again. That’s the path the CDU can choose. That is its crossroads.

Milena Preradovic: Is Merz the right man for the job?

Antje Hermenau: I think he’s the right man at the moment, because he’s able to formulate a sensible opposition without immediately foaming at the mouth like a Dobrindt or something. I think that’s a good thing. Conservatives don’t like the slobbering at all. On the other hand, he may be the one who has to moderate the transition. And that’s where I’m curious to see how that plays out. I’ve noticed that the local Saxon premier is being given a bit of room within the federal CDU to present the local popular opinion more strongly. There’s still room for improvement. That’s all okay. But the point is, there is again a wide range in the CDU, what can be said, even if you belong to the federal board. And I think that’s how it starts, that you offer more opportunities for identification. But you have to be serious about it. It doesn’t work as a cover. And I’m very curious to see how that develops.

Milena Preradovic: Let’s come back to the AfD. You caused quite a stir in 2016 when you read from one of your books at an AfD event. How do you view the AfD and why were you there?

Antje Hermenau: Well, the AfD has had my full attention ever since it was founded, because it has attacked what I see as an extremely important issue, namely the question of the stability of our common currency, the euro. You were on the right track there, in my opinion. We are now seeing what it means when people print and print and print as if there were no tomorrow. The state is no longer able to act, it is filled up with money that can no longer do much. But it is not capable of acting, and that is already a problem. So that’s where they had my attention. Then, little by little, patterns came to light. There I was then sure that it is then certainly not a party with which I am sometime, which I am sometime. So then the migration issue came up with a tone that made me very uncomfortable. I myself have a Chinese sister-in-law, I was married to an American, I have Syrian Kurds in my social family, so I feel extremely uncomfortable if immigration is not discussed constructively. But constructive also means, as I said earlier, that you have to focus on controlled immigration and that you also have to link it to the obligations that immigrants have. And that is not being done enough. The tolerance concept of the West Germans is, in my view, a comfortable one, in that it is confused with laissez faire and said: “They can all come quietly, and back there in the corner they don’t get dirty, it doesn’t bother them, and they can stay there”. That is not tolerance. Tolerance is an active concept, that is, there is a give and take, and I think that is neglected in integration. And if you don’t have a handle on integration, you have to be careful about migration. That’s my opinion. And well, things like that.

Milena Preradovic: We have already talked about the Greens as a sect, also what happens there, that you are no longer allowed to speak your mind or something. What do you actually think of the Greens, of their education? That is also discussed a lot. We have people there without. well, a lot of people, even without any kind of education. That is, they have made a career in the party after graduating from high school or after a few semesters of study. Are these people at all suitable to govern a country?

Antje Hermenau: Yes, that’s a leading question that you’re asking now. But you can already make it harder for me. I am smart enough. So there’s always an achiever, there is, we all know that. But the fact that they’re coming out in raucous numbers is mind-boggling. And maybe it’s really a lack of patience to deal with something thoroughly. That is, after all, a degree or even an academic degree and diploma, with patience and meticulousness, to really deal with the subject. That would also explain why the Greens are very happy to jump to the next topic as soon as one has somehow been halfway discussed, and then to the next again. The implementation level is a shallowness that they don’t like to get into. That’s very striking as a group. And I’m also amazed at how many don’t finish their training. I think that’s a strange thing. I’ve done two. One part-time during the government phase with Schröder. Simply because I wanted to do my work in the Budget Committee to the best of my ability. That was important to me personally, not indifferent. And that led to a lot of perplexity.

Milena Preradovic: But you have not yet done a Tiktok training?

Antje Hermenau: Please?

Milena Preradovic: A Tiktok training. One has the impression, whether you are the Green Katharina Schulze….

Antje Hermenau: Ahso these dance videos. Yes, yes, that’s exactly what I don’t need in life. I hope other people don’t either.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, it makes a somewhat infantile impression on me. What do you think about…?

Antje Hermenau: Staying young is very important for the Greens…

Milena Preradovic: Stay young? Then we will soon see Trittin at the beautydoc. What do you think of people like Baerbock, Lang or Habeck?

Antje Hermenau: Well, I think that Ms. Baerbock is very courageous to go forward like this without knowing whether she is right. I think that Robert Habeck is trying to understand what’s going on. So he’s not open-minded when it comes to the economy. He is surrounded by state secretaries. Seven of them, three or four of whom are actually more like a shura when it comes to the Green Party’s election program. That certainly doesn’t make the job any easier. And I think that if you talk about it for 20 years, publicly, that you want to make the energy turnaround as the biggest project in Germany to save the climate, you can’t go in there unprepared, like the barber. And I am surprised how little the Greens as a whole have been prepared for the many challenges associated with it. And they must have somehow thrown salmon rolls at each other at Agora Energiewende instead of discussing the implementation in depth, because otherwise we wouldn’t be so lost in this matter. And even a Robert Habeck in the summer of this year can no longer get the sentence: “Nobody could have guessed how intertwined the gas markets are”. That’s not possible. Klaus Müller is now sitting on the relevant authority, so he could theoretically have been told this by his people. So I am really amazed with how much unpreparedness one goes into such a difficult task.

Milena Preradovic: And the US magazine Politico has now named Habeck the most influential doer in Europe.

Antje Hermenau: Well, who has changed so much so quickly in such a short time as he has? Regardless of whether it’s for the better or for the worse. The speed is impressive.

Milena Preradovic: You can look at it that way. You just called Annalena Baerbock courageous.

Antje Hermenau: Yes, because she goes forward relatively unprotected.

Milena Preradovic: Well, the question here is…. I see with Baerbock and also with Ricarda Lang, when I look at these interviews, I always see set pieces that are thrown out. So, I never have the impression that someone is speaking from the bottom of their heart and has really thought about the issues beforehand. Is that just an assessment on my part?

Antje Hermenau: Well, I share the view that things might not be well prepared. That’s quite conceivable. Or that they have not been thought through to the end. Sometimes things are rushed through very quickly and then all you have afterwards is repair work. You can see that quite clearly in the outdoor area. And then you’re surprised when you disembark at international conferences. So that’s a difficult thing. I don’t want to comment on Ricarda Lang at all, because I always lose it. I don’t even listen to the end, I can’t stand it. But with Annalena Baerbock, I do believe that part of her is inwardly convinced that she is doing the right thing. The only question is whether everyone else sees it that way.

Milena Preradovic: A part of her. Also beautifully formulated. Another topic You write in your book: “The only things that hold people together in the long run are patriotism and religion. Neither is in the zeitgeist now, certainly not in the green zeitgeist. Do you still see cohesion in Germany?

Antje Hermenau: Well, let’s put it this way: there is a kind of rediscovery of these issues. People are enthusiastic about how Ukrainians stand up for their homeland and fight as patriots. Foreigners admire that. This is one of those program points, again at the center left, where everything contradicts itself. With others it is admired and one forbids oneself to do it. I believe that there is a struggle in society about whether we have an identity as Germans and what it looks like. And I believe that the majority of Germans answer this with yes. We have our own culture, we have our own language, we have our own understanding, we have our own economic system with the social market economy. Yes. And the politicians, however, say no. So it is striking how this demolition, so to speak, in communication. I noticed with interest that Francis Fukuyama, who at that time spoke of the end of history, corrected himself a few years ago and said: “Yes, identity and nation are important and religion too. The U.S., along with Japan, is perhaps still seen as one of the few industrialized countries that are still strongly religious and where this plays a major role in public life, whereas in others it no longer does. And that’s why the nation and national identity are also important, and we in Europe are in the process of giving them up. But the peoples don’t want that. The Italians want to be Italian and the Spaniards want to be Spanish. And most Germans want to be German. And I think that’s perfectly normal. And that’s why it’s amazing that it’s really being fought against, because people are dreaming of a United States, of Europe or something like that. But I think that’s absurd. Europe has grown differently. The USA was a single immigration country and the natives were flattened. That is a clear story. But you can’t deal with Europe that way, unless you think that half a billion people are going to immigrate from Africa and do the same thing. Item.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, okay.

Antje Hermenau: We are not the USA and we are not small Indian tribes, but these are peoples.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, you can just leave it like that. As far as religion is concerned, I already have the impression that people miss it. You already have the impression that they see in narratives the corona measures, corona politics, climate, especially that they see there so religion substitute. And if you…

Antje Hermenau: We have discussed that, quasi-religious sentiments. Yes.

Milena Preradovic: When I see all these young people who are now panicking about the climate catastrophe in five months, who are getting stuck, who are crying in front of the camera, I always ask myself, aren’t they being instrumentalized? I always think of Mao’s Red Guards, young people who have been revved up and can be used for anything. Maybe that’s a bit harsh.

Antje Hermenau: I mean, the Catholics might have been pleased in the past if they had had as much success with hell and the descriptions of the torments of hell as they have today with the climate catastrophe. But yes, that has strictly religious features, then even in these excesses. I’ve seen young girls on YouTube crying in front of the camera because they just can’t get over the fact that the government doesn’t understand that we’re all going to die tomorrow. That’s hysterical behavior, of course. Yeah, sure, it is.

Milena Preradovic: But what about instrumentalization? These people are being led, after all.

Antje Hermenau: Every young generation is instrumentalized.

Milena Preradovic: Hm hm.

Antje Hermenau: Well, always by those who are governing at the moment, I’m convinced of that. They would like it to continue the way you are doing it yourself.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, but it goes even further. You are also used by foreign organizations.

Antje Hermenau: Yes, that seems to me to be the case with these street stickers. Even the taz, which in my eyes has a certain authority in such matters, has shown that the sources of funding are highly dubious: So the sources of funding are highly dubious. If the taz says that, then that’s the way it is. So I would accept that. And for me, that also means that you have to look afterwards to see who it is. Why are they doing this?

Milena Preradovic: Actually, they are, for example, heirs of the big fossil oil companies. Partly. So the Gettys are in there. The Rockefellers are in on it.

Antje Hermenau: Well, they give something from their fortune and are probably also at home in such a world of thought, because they can afford it. We are back to bread and butter or what comes on top. But that doesn’t change anything for the reality of life of millions of people.

Milena Preradovic: What do you mean?

Antje Hermenau: Well, if you stick to the street and claim that everything will end tomorrow with climate change, that has a lot to do with real life.

Milena Preradovic: Right is however large topic.

Antje Hermenau: Great theater.

Antje Hermenau: My suggestion was yes, just make a protective fence around it. Let the policemen stand guard and then they should show posture there for three days.

Milena Preradovic: Just like that. Not on the street, but next to the street.

Antje Hermenau: Never let stick on the street and close the one street. And then it’s good. And then it is protected for three days. And then they are welcome to show attitude.

Milena Preradovic: When they make BMW they have complained yes, that they have turned off the light and turned off the heating.

Antje Hermenau: We are back to bread and butter. There are learning processes.

Milena Preradovic: Yes, they don’t seem to be so tough at the end.

Antje Hermenau: Yes, but these are learning processes. And if you always discuss theoretical things, you miss the learning goal, so to speak, which is how life is.

Milena Preradovic: Exactly. And there’s a lot to life. And not just sticking to the street and listening to some theoretical stuff.

Antje Hermenau: When I went to the AfD in 2016, because they asked me that, I accepted the invitation and knew that I would get in trouble. But I still thought it was okay. I read from my own book and it was also announced as a polemic. I wanted to argue and so it was. And there were also people from the district association of the Left and a lot of uninvolved citizens who are not in either party. There were a lot of journalists, actually only Samoa TV was missing and they watched everything. And afterwards, Peter Unfried wrote in the taz: “There was a stirring of the left-wing Greens, who wanted to ostracize Hermenau” and who said that she would join the AfD, or some such nonsense on purpose, in order to make me look bad. That was simply a Verfemungsintrige and what he has experienced there the three hours were democracy at its best, as he wants them.

Milena Preradovic: Oh, what a wonderful closing. Thank you very much, Ms. Hermenau, for this very clear and at the same time very entertaining analysis.

Antje Hermenau: With humor is the only way to bear all this.

Milena Preradovic: People sometimes say to me: Why do you always laugh?

Antje Hermenau: The only way to bear it.

Milena Preradovic: That’s exactly how it is. Thank you very much for having a sense of humor and that we could also laugh together.

Antje Hermenau: Yes, with pleasure. Thank you very much.

Milena Preradovic: Well, folks, when a democracy is administered by people who don’t necessarily see democracy as the greatest goal, then it’s probably in danger. The problem is that so many people have opted out of discourse and would rather believe than be fully informed. Maybe it’s our job to wake those people up. So, have a good time. See you soon.
